XIII Death 06:00
When I hit the sink began the dream of someone standing alone, staring at the sea and with the shivers that came dancing over my grave in foreboding As I watched her there, paralyzed I felt a shift within from my spine up to my skull where Chrysanthemums bloomed in foreboding A murmur from the earth Ancestral voices from sunken tombs in the cities you reach in the deepest of sleep where one day we will meet an appointment we keep with the night But in a smothered interior a lone and naked figure stares back into a mirror and on the table the cards spell out a future in foreboding If regret is a dream of having seen the future then still you’ve chosen not to change your path again A dream of having crawled from the ocean A dream of crawling joyful from the womb and learning to breathe in the air to be awoke from the nightmare of a world where everywhere you see humans longing for death

Standing on the shore she will never know Her tears still reach him in the undertow I wonder where’s the wreckage that around your body racks Dreaming of you there, crawling your way back At night I pray the storm will rise and wash me away

The Whorl 06:13
I’ve been staring at the walls again, seeing through I hear the sound of the waves seeping through into the room They fill me with a feeling now that I once knew An image of you waiting in an empty room Waiting for me to get tangled up in the history Coz I get so bored alone and when I get that way I know It’s calling to me from a cellular memory Calling to you from the centre of the whorl I lay in foetal position Await the rush of the ocean and now the noise filters through I’ve been waiting for you so long So now I make my way back into a dream but now I’m on the train I want to be In the rain outside as it lashes down, pummeling the ground, a cold that seems to follow you over grass, and over stone, down those paths again I make my way back to where you called out to me from a cellular memory I’m getting closer to the centre of the whorl (chorus) I’ve been waiting so long for you I look into the whorl, I’m seeing through I’m falling through the floor, falling into I’m treading water, and sinking into her The smell of rain makes me new

Polkerris 06:23
When I awake I find myself standing on the beach with driftwood and seaweed swimming coldly around my feet A congregation of robed figures stand judically along the beach and with a wordless spell they seem to will something to rise up from beneath A great black mass begins to rise up from the deep it comes dragging chains and wreckage and other debris And it sends a wave of ash and oil crashing towards the beach and when it hits it sends the world beneath rising up to meet me. But after a time the horror subsides and I struggle but find my feet. It spits me out and I float gently out to sea asleep
6.
Setting off Red sky in the morning A sailor’s warning Cast by the dawn The drunken feeling of being aboard To find the release that I’ve been dreaming of Your apathy has been the death of me and your apologies wont mean a thing to me The love you reap will become inverted and the bed you’ve made is where you will sleep So I’ll go quietly to the open sea and let the waves take me into eternity There’s nothing left for me but to go quietly to the open sea and let the waves take me A curse on you and all you will do Everywhere you go, I will be there too Nos da dhywgh hwi

The Moth 04:59
Here once was a window but now it’s gone and the path it looked out on is overgrown I painted a picture to take its place but it never changes in the wind and the rain A faded grey photo with its edges curled only meant something real in another world After the rain a displaced spider crawls up to your window I went out to the forest to be among the birds but the trees remained silent and unconcerned Back in the bedroom with the walls closing in is like trying to sleep at night inside a coffin Looking up at the window into the night where a moth’s mottled wings cover the sky
9.
Winter Light 07:58
Standing still under the winter sun It’s weak white light fills me up Why would someone stay for so many years in such a suffocating place? Trying to make amends, not trying to save face To fix a broken bottle, to mend a brittle fence every time the storm breaks on through Remembering to breathe, allowed to take my leave it is okay to die if that’s how it has to be but now I understand what I’ve always known to be written in water or else be turned to stone Cut your dead adrift Let them float away As it rains into the sea A sigil is drawn complete

about

XIII was originally recorded throughout 2011 and released under the 'Dreamers Awake' moniker early in 2012, but this redux edition represents an almost total re-record, remix and remaster. The original drum tracks (performed by the crazy talented Matthew Hekker) survive but basically all else is new.

All songs written by Mark Norgate

Mark Norgate - Vocals, Guitars, Synths
Matthew Hekker - Drums
Elaine Round - Flute

Drums recorded by Stuart Jarvis at
Deepsee Studios, London ~2011

Re-amping, mixing and mastering by Wayne Adams
at Bear Bites Horse, London in 2018
